Offense has come from basically that. 'You look like a girl' 'You look like a gnome'
I think it does kind of seem like reaching to say something just for the sake of it, filling the silence. People don't necessarily want to remain faceless, but in real life there's not such a sudden focus on appearance as topic of discussion. It's not so much 'brought up' or 'brought to attention,' it simply 'is'. That said, anything forced would probably be no less awkward. And I guess some people like the attention even if it's not such a normal situation.
I'll throw in another idea: is it possible to set up an image in people's profiles, for a personal pic?
